Chapter 16
He was flanked by two of the Saga Knights, their unseeing milky eyes glowed unnaturally in the dim hall.
"Nic!" I ran towards him as the knights pushed him into the room. He tried to take a step, but his legs failed beneath him and he stumbled into the room.
I caught him before he hit the ground. Wrapping my arms around his chest, I barely managed to keep his larger frame upright as his size pushed my centre of gravity out of balance. He held me, his grip limp and weak as I tried to prop him up.
"Amber..." His voice was weak and strained as though he'd spent a long time screaming. My hands slipped against the black cotton tunic he wore and it took me a moment to realise the reason he was so difficult to hold on to was due to the blood that slicked down his back.
"Help me," I said through gritted teeth as I tried to manoeuvre Nic to a chair beneath one of the barred windows.
"I thought your reunion would be somewhat more joyous," Julian's voice turned the blood in my veins to ice. I refused to meet his gaze as Alastor came to my aid and assisted me in getting Nic to the chair. He collapsed onto the chair, his breathing harsh and laboured.
I cupped his face with my hands and tilted his face up to the light. "Nic, can you hear me?"
He opened his eyes and I could see the pain that clouded his vision. "Are you really here?"
"I'm really here," I said softly, brushing aside the lone tear that trailed from the corner of his eye.
His gaze grew sharper and he tried to straighten himself. He caught my arm, his grip painful. "You shouldn't have come."
"I had to. I couldn't leave you to their mercy."
Nic shook his head. "It was a mistake. It's nothing more than a trap..." His voice faded out as his eyes rolled back in his head and he slumped back in the chair. Only Alastor's strength kept him fixed in place.
"It seems Nic is a little tired after his ordeal." The joy in Julian's voice caused the hairs on the back of my neck to rise to attention.
"You bastard!" I whirled around and strode toward the door. Julian stood nonchalantly on the other side of the threshold, his hands clasped lightly in front of his body. I reached out towards him, but my hand slammed into something solid that stood between us. I pressed the palm of my hand flat against the surface, feeling the curious magic as it brushed against my skin.
"Do you like it?" he said, glancing at the symbols etched into the door frame. "A little insurance policy to ensure our guests don't wander into places where they're not welcome."
"What have you done to him?"
"Nothing that isn't befitting his status as a traitor."
"You tortured him."
Julian cocked an eyebrow at me. "If you were in my place, would you not have done the same?"
"No."
"You're an accomplished liar, Amber, but I would expect nothing less from someone like you.
